How this book can help

“Everything works out except relationships”You manage work, money and children. Yet relationships with different people keep ending the same way.
“Pull yourself together!”This is how you speak to yourself, without noticing that the voice belongs to someone else, usually a parent.
“I understand it all, but I will still go out and have a cigarette”Understanding does not become action. There is a gap between “I know what to do” and “I do what I always do”.
“Other people's opinions decide what kind of day I have”But your self-esteem took shape by around seven, through the praise and criticism you received.

If even one card describes you, what follows is not advice on how things should be, but an exploration of where the pattern came from, why it repeats and how to change it.

About the book

A mindful life is one in which thoughts, feelings and actions play together like a well-rehearsed jazz band, rather than separate instruments. I compare the journey to diving into water: depth lies beyond psychological defences and childhood wounds. Reaching it means learning not to flee pain, rationalise it or numb it with food or drink, but to accept it a drop at a time.

I do not promise that life will become easy after this book. I once believed in a magic pill too. There is none: change involves pain and rethinking what matters. What the book offers instead is an understanding of where your decisions come from. Through cases from my practice, I show how childhood patterns become adult life: why a successful executive enters a meeting like a schoolchild in trouble, why a caring wife repeatedly ends up alone, and why someone can understand and feel everything yet still walk out and light a cigarette.

  • 14 techniques in the third part: anxiety, procrastination, self-esteem, money, dependence and accepting your age
  • Over thirty cases from practice, with names, ages and outcomes rather than anonymous references to “a client of mine”
  • What a psychologist can and cannot offer, and how to avoid a heavily promoted charlatan

«Beneath resentment lies pain; beneath guilt lies love».— an extract from the book
