How this book can help

“What would Dad say?”You are still trying to prove yourself, even if you have not spoken to him for years.
“Mum worries about me, and I love her”Thirty-five and living with Mum. There is nothing to blame her for, so you cannot move on.
“I had to grow up too soon”It sounds like a strength, but it means you gave care rather than received it.
“You just need to forgive everyone”Forgiveness cannot be commanded: hurt first needs to be acknowledged and experienced.

Separation is complete when the internal parent falls silent and you reach a truce with the real parent at a comfortable distance.

About the book

Childhood attachment wounds affect romantic, friendship and professional relationships. They influence self-esteem, resilience, boundaries and choices of partner, career and financial strategy. The effects extend further: insecure attachment can make it difficult to leave an unfulfilling job or a country where you are unhappy. Working through many of life's impasses starts here.

I wrote this book following sessions with clients who struggled in their relationships with parents. It is structured as a guide: how attachment works and why it breaks down; nine recognisable childhood scenarios, each ending with a list of consequences in adulthood; and what you can do today. How to choose and maintain an appropriate distance without conflict. How to talk to a difficult parent without being overwhelmed. And why you need not try to forgive everything: forgiveness cannot be commanded; hurt first needs to be acknowledged and lived through.

  • Four attachment styles, secure, anxious, avoidant and disorganised, and how to identify yours
  • Nine “If you were…” chapters exploring neglect, unreliable parenting, achievement-based love and overprotection, with their consequences in adulthood
  • A practical third part: choosing an appropriate distance, staying calm in conversations and avoiding repeating your parents' patterns with your own children
  • A separate chapter on why you do not have to try to forgive everything

«Attachment develops not only towards caring, safe adults, but also towards unsafe ones».— an extract from the book

A look inside the book

What readers say

«A good book that lets you see your relationship with your parents through different eyes. I come from a dysfunctional family, so reading it was therapeutic for me».

Екатерина

«The quality of the book, cover and printing is excellent. I am delighted with the content: everything is explained in an accessible, straightforward and engaging way. I recommend it to adult children who repeatedly struggle to build trusting relationships: it helps a lot of things fall into place».

Снежана

«I recommend this to anyone still waiting for approval from their parents, living or deceased; anyone pursuing what Mum or Dad would have wanted rather than their own goals. And to high achievers who never felt loved enough. It brings you back to reality. But the book cannot do the work for you: it is a long process».
